Debi Hume - Hit and Run Accident Victim

Hi,
My friends, today’s story is of a hit and run accident victim who got amputated. Her name is Debi Hume and she is from New Zealand. With the help of Prosthetics her life is back on track. Debi has travelled overseas, she has bungy-jumped, rock climbed, worked full time as a retail manger and finds swimming without her leg the most amazing feeling, as you are lighter in the water.

Let me tell you more about her

At the age of 16, on the 10 Feb 1982, just eight days after her birthday, Debi Hume was the victim of a hit and run accident involving a motorbike. She spent two lots of three months in hospital in traction, above knee cast, two skin grafts, one bone graft and had her ankle frozen. She had no help from the outside and her main support person, her mom, was her rock. Debi's mom came to the hospital every morning after getting Debi's brother off to school, then helped to bathe, dress and feed Debi. She then headed back home to feed the family and back again to the hospital to look after Debi before finally heading home about 10pm. She hardly left Debi's side and has continued to be her rock - without her mom, Debi doesn't know what would have happened or how she would have coped.

Debi had to fight for crutches and a wheelchair; she had no physio and no outside help at home while recovering from her accident. Finally, in 1992, nearly ten years after the hit and run, Debi decided to have her leg amputated. By this time, her son was three years old and she had been to hell and back dealing with the pain and limited mobility of her injured leg whilst looking after a baby. She wished the leg had been amputated at the time of the accident, but being a young woman she presumes the surgeons wanted to try and keep her leg for looks more than mobility. She felt that having her leg amputated was like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

She finds using crutches a pain, so she either uses her wheelchair or crawls if she doesn't have her leg on and she has never been a fan of footwear. She has had many limbs over the years and trusts her prosthetist. With his recommendations she is currently wearing her most comfortable set-up yet. Debi has travelled overseas, she has bungy-jumped, rock climbed, worked full time as a retail manger and finds swimming without her leg the most amazing feeling, as you are lighter in the water. Snorkeling is also a lot easier with one leg.

My friends look at her, without any help she got her life back and doing all those activities which a normal person can do. Always remember that you are still you and only the exterior look has changed. I am here for you guys and I will keep updating relevant information, Real Stories and Details about Advance Technology Prosthetics for you.
